How to Buy Cannabis in New Mexico

Your first-time guide to purchasing legal cannabis in the Land of Enchantment — ID requirements, payment methods, pricing, delivery options, and online ordering.

Last verified: March 2026

What You Need

New Mexico's Cannabis Regulation Act made recreational cannabis legal for adults 21 and older on June 29, 2021, with retail sales launching on April 1, 2022. Here is what you need to walk in and buy:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older — driver's license, passport, or military ID from any state or country
  • No residency requirement. Out-of-state visitors and tourists are welcome at every licensed dispensary.
  • Cash recommended. Most dispensaries accept cash and some accept debit cards. ATMs are on-site at virtually all locations.

The Purchase Process

  1. Enter the lobby. Most dispensaries have a secured waiting area separated from the sales floor.
  2. Show your ID. Staff will verify your age. Some locations scan IDs; others check visually.
  3. Browse the menu. A budtender will help you choose products. Tell them if it is your first time — there is no judgment, and they are trained to guide new consumers.
  4. Pay and go. Cash is universal. Some locations accept PIN debit. Your purchase comes in sealed, child-resistant packaging.

Purchase Limits

New Mexico allows adults 21+ to purchase the following per transaction:

  • 2 ounces of cannabis flower
  • 16 grams of cannabis extract (concentrates)
  • 800 mg of edible THC
Start Low, Go Slow

If you are new to cannabis, ask your budtender for a low-dose recommendation. For edibles, start with 2.5–5mg THC and wait at least 2 hours before taking more. For flower, take one small puff and wait 15 minutes. More guidance at TryCannabis.org.

Pricing

New Mexico's cannabis market has matured rapidly, and prices have dropped 61.9% on flower since the April 2022 launch. Current price ranges:

Product Price Range
Flower (eighth / 3.5g) $20–$55
Flower (ounce / 28g) $75–$284
Concentrates (per gram) $20–$60
Edibles $15–$30

Tax is included in the sticker price at most dispensaries. New Mexico charges a 12% cannabis excise tax plus gross receipts tax (equivalent to sales tax, varies by municipality).

Payment Methods

  • Cash: Accepted everywhere. The safest and most universal option.
  • Debit cards: Some dispensaries accept PIN debit. Transactions may process as ATM withdrawals with a small fee.
  • ATMs: Available on-site at virtually all dispensaries. Expect a $3–5 surcharge.
  • Credit cards: Generally not accepted due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses.

Delivery

Cannabis delivery is legal in New Mexico through licensed courier services. Delivery is strongest in the Albuquerque metro area, with platforms like Weedmaps, Leafly, and Dutchie connecting consumers to local dispensaries. R. Greenleaf Organics offers free delivery on orders of $20 or more. Couriers may carry up to $10,000 in product per vehicle.

Online Ordering

Most New Mexico dispensaries allow online browsing and pre-ordering for in-store pickup. Use these platforms to find menus and place orders:

  • Weedmaps — the most comprehensive dispensary listings for New Mexico
  • Leafly — menus, reviews, and strain information
  • Dutchie — online ordering integrated with many NM dispensary websites
  • CROP portal — the CCD's official licensed retailer search

Hours

Most New Mexico dispensaries are open 9–10 AM to 8–9 PM daily. Hours vary by location and municipality. Check individual dispensary websites or Weedmaps for current hours.

After Your Purchase

  • Transport: Keep cannabis in a sealed container while in a vehicle. Do not consume while driving.
  • Consumption: Legal on private property with the owner's permission. Not in public, not in vehicles. Licensed consumption lounges are also available.
  • State lines: Cannabis cannot leave New Mexico. Transporting across any state line is a federal crime — even into Colorado, which also has legal cannabis.
Do Not Cross State Lines

Transporting cannabis across any state line is a federal crime. This includes the Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and Oklahoma borders. If you are visiting from Texas, consume your purchase in New Mexico before heading home.
